The sweet potato plant (lpomea batatas) is found throughout the tropics and the warmer temperate regions of the world. Its tuberous roots as well as its young leaves and shoots are edible.

Local folk medicine prescribes sweet potato leaves for asthma, burns, diarrhea, fever, and other ailments. The research aims to validate the anti-bacterial properties of sweet potato leaves, and has verified their efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, a common cause of common human diseases


Bacterial infections are serious problems among children and adults. This study was conducted to test the antibacterial property of sweet potato leaves, a common plant in the Philippines The extracts were tested on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coil, two of the most common bacteria that cause serious infections. A commercial antibiotic was used to compare with the extracts from sweet potato leaves in terms of the zones of inhibition to E. coil and S. aureus. Results of the experiment reveal that E. coil is resistant to the commercial antibiotic used and the sweet potato leaves extract. On the other hand, S. aureus shows sensitivity to the commercial antibiotic used and intermediate to the extract of sweet potato leaves. CONTINUE READING……
